Service Area Overview:
Northside Hospital Cancer Institute's Research Program is one of the largest community-based oncology/hematology programs in the nation. It is one of only a handful of programs that offers Phase I-IV clinical research. At Northside, we pride ourselves on offering the latest in breakthrough procedures, technologies and treatments through our collaboration with some of the most respected research institutions and programs in the country. Clinical trials are typically available only in university or research institution settings. However, through these partnerships our Cancer Institute gives patients access to exclusive clinical trials, making us one of the largest and most respected providers of comprehensive cancer care in the Southeast.
Our program has received an Outstanding Achievement Award as a fully accredited Comprehensive Community Hospital Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) Compliance Specialist functions in a supportive role to the IRB Manager to implement the activities of the IRB, which is responsible for overseeing research conducted within Northside Hospital facilities so that the rights, safety and welfare of participants in clinical trials are protected. The duties of the position include assisting the IRB Manager with the following: managing the routine operations of the IRB; working closely with the IRB Chair; serving as a non-voting member of the IRB; participating in IRB meetings and providing advice and guidance to IRB members on interpretation of state, federal, and international regulations; acting as a liaison between institutional leadership and external entities such as the United States Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) and the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA); ensuring that submitted protocols are reviewed efficiently and consistent with federal regulations; overseeing the maintenance of accurate records of IRB actions; updating and maintaining the institution’s IRB policies and Standard Operating Procedures; overseeing the adequacy of IRB membership; and conducting and supervising the training of IRB members and physician researchers. The IRB Manager may delegate or transfer authority and duties to the IRB Compliance Specialist, as appropriate.
REQUIRED: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. At least two years experience in the protection of human subjects in research. Applicants must also have knowledge of and experience in the interpretation of federal regulations and guidelines for conduct of research involving human subjects. Strong interpersonal relationship skills and oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in the operation of personal computers and the utilization of word processing, database, and spreadsheet software programs including: Microsoft Office/Word/PowerPoint/Excel/Access and Internet Explorer. PREFERRED: Certification as an IRB professional by Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) or by the National Association of IRB Leaders (NAIL, formerly know as NAIM).
